| Q. |
Is
United Way just a fund raising organization? |
| A. |
While
St. Joseph County United Way is a fund raising organization,
it accomplishes much more. It works with other community-based
organizations to identify problems such as homelessness, affordable
housing, teen pregnancy, child care, etc., and assist in developing
a plan to resolve the problems.
The volunteers and the staff of the St. Joseph County United Way contacts companies in St. Joseph County in an effort to
reach every employee to educate them about the Untied Fund programs
and to raise money for those programs.
A very important role that the United Way fulfills in the community
is supporting 39 health and human service agencies. The Budget
and Allocation Committee is responsible for receiving and reviewing
funding requests from agencies. As a part of the needs-based
fund distribution system, agency programs are evaluated to ensure
that they are accomplishing program objectives and addressing
major community problems. |

| Q. |
Why
have a United Way campaign? |
| A. |
The
annual fund raising drive which helps to provide critical human
service programs is the most efficient, economical method yet
devised. It works so well because volunteers combine their resources
for one appeal instead of many individual drives. Contributors
have the opportunity to see their dollars go the furthest to
do the most good, helping to support many programs through one
gift. |

|
| Q. |
Who
runs St. Joseph County United Way? |
| A. |
Knowledgeable
volunteers, a cross-section of men and women who work and live
in the community, work with the United Way staff members to
organize and conduct the annual campaign, serve on allocation
committees, planning committees, as well as determine policies.
The volunteer Board of Directors, in addition to being accountable
to the community, is legally responsible to see that the St.
Joseph County United Way is properly managed. |

|
| Q. |
How
are special events, lunches, and the Victory Celebration funded? |
| A. |
It
has been St. Joseph County United Way's experience that supporters
do not turn out or give as generously without events and publicity
around which to rally them and their attention. Costs of kickoffs,
victory celebrations, luncheons, and similar events are borne
by participants or are sponsored by corporations. It is important
to have these events to generate publicity, enthusiasm, and
recognition. |

|
|
| Q. |
What
is the Leadership Giving Program? |
| A. |
The
Leadership Giving Program is a recognition program for people
who contribute $1,000 or more per year to the St. Joseph County
United Way. |
